The marathon truly continues. In a deeply emotional ceremony, the city of Los Angeles has officially cemented the legacy of Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom by renaming the iconic intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard in his honor.
The unveiling of Nipsey Hussle Square brought out family, friends, and countless fans to celebrate a man who poured everything he had into uplifting his community. But amidst the celebration, it was the touching words from those closest to him that truly captured the weight of the moment.
Nipsey was known for his visionary mindset, always looking ten steps ahead. During the tribute, his longtime partner, Lauren London, shared a beautiful anecdote that proved just how powerful his foresight really was.
Taking the stage, London, who dated the rapper from 2013 until his tragic passing in 2019, recalled a conversation they had during the early days of their relationship.
“When me and Nip first started dating, we would drive by over here and he would be like, ‘You know, Boogie, one day, they’re gonna name this whole section after me,’” she shared with the crowd. “And here we are today.”
Perhaps the most profound moment of the ceremony came from Kameron Carter, the teenage son of Lauren London and Lil Wayne. Speaking with a wisdom well beyond his years, Kameron opened up about how his relationship with the intersection has evolved.
He admitted that passing by the area used to bring him a heavy sense of sorrow. But seeing the community come together to honor Nipsey’s legacy changed everything for him.
“Seeing everybody here today and how we all came out and how it’s named after him, it changes the whole perspective on everything. And it gives me hope. Things can change,” Kameron expressed. “Now I feel empowered to be here and it’s named after him. I know that’s exactly what he would have wanted. That right here where everything happened is right here where everything will grow.”
Kameron didn’t stop at just the local impact; he expanded his message to reflect the current climate of the country, offering a much-needed word of encouragement.
“Right here where we all are, this is only a microcosm for where we are as people in America,” he continued. “We’re going through a very hard time right now. There’s a lot of unknown and sometimes you can look in the news and be like, ‘There’s no hope’… All it is is sadness. And that’s not all it has to be. If we all can come together, we can all uplift each other and get through these hard times. And these hard times can be the platform for us to grow and get better, and get better than we were.”
As the signs for Nipsey Hussle Square now proudly hang above South L.A., they serve as a permanent reminder of a man who loved his neighborhood enough to invest in its future. Just as Kameron so beautifully stated, the intersection is no longer just a reminder of what was lost, but a symbol of everything that can still grow.
