The wizarding world is officially back. HBO has released the highly anticipated first teaser trailer for its Harry Potter television reboot, officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The network also announced a surprise premiere date: the eight-episode first season will debut globally on HBO Max on Christmas Day 2026, moving up the previously expected 2027 timeline.

The nostalgia-packed trailer hits all the familiar magical notes, opening with a young Harry in his cupboard under the stairs getting pushed around by Dudley, before moving on to his fateful meeting with Hagrid and the Hogwarts Express pulling out of Platform 9¾.

The teaser officially introduces the new Golden Trio, featuring newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

However, one of the most talked-about moments of the teaser is the brief but thrilling first look at acclaimed British actor Paapa Essiedu as the brooding Potions master, Severus Snape. The Olivier-nominated star, known for his standout performances in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, is shown casting a spell in a darkened hallway at Hogwarts.

Essiedu joins a star-studded adult ensemble that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Stepping into the shoes of such a complex anti-hero, a role famously originated by the late Alan Rickman, was always going to be a massive undertaking. Unfortunately, Essiedu’s casting has been met with a wave of racist online backlash and horrifying death threats.

In a recent interview, Essiedu revealed that he has received daily messages on Instagram telling him to “Quit or I’ll murder you.” In response to the escalating toxicity, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that serious security protocols are already in place to protect the cast.

Despite the heavy emotional toll, Essiedu refuses to let the hate dictate his journey or ruin the role. Speaking openly about the experience, the actor explained that the abuse actually fuels his passion to deliver an authentic performance and make the character his own.

Having grown up finding an escape in J.K. Rowling’s books, Essiedu draws motivation from the impact his casting will have on a new generation. He emphasized that the idea of kids who look like him finally seeing themselves represented in the wizarding world is exactly the motivation he needs to ignore the intimidation.

With a decade-long commitment to the franchise, Essiedu is standing his ground and preparing to bring a fresh, compelling take to one of Hogwarts’ most consequential characters.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will stream on HBO Max starting Christmas 2026. Check out the trailer below.
