If there’s one thing Steven Spielberg knows how to do, it’s deliver a summer blockbuster that makes us look up at the sky in absolute wonder, and a little bit of terror. After a brief hiatus following his personal 2022 drama The Fabelmans, the legendary director is officially returning to his sci-fi roots with the highly anticipated UFO thriller, Disclosure Day.
Academy Award-nominee Colman Domingo is stepping into the Spielberg universe, joining a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell.
Based on the thrilling new trailer that just dropped, the film centers on a world-shaking conspiracy and the chaotic fallout of first contact. The plot kicks into gear when a cybersecurity whistleblower (O’Connor) steals top-secret government information proving that humanity is not alone in the universe.
Things get incredibly eerie when a Kansas City meteorologist (Blunt) shockingly begins speaking an alien language on live television. Meanwhile, Firth plays a menacing, highly-connected authority figure determined to keep the alien secret hidden at all costs to preserve the global world order. While exact character details are being kept under wraps, the footage reveals Domingo playing a key figure on a desperate hunt to uncover the truth behind the extraterrestrial cover-up.
For Domingo, the project is more than just a massive sci-fi popcorn flick. In a recent interview, the actor teased that while the film shares DNA with classic Spielberg alien movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds, it brings something completely fresh to the table.
Domingo described the script as “a love letter to our humanity,” noting that he actually cried after reading it. “I thought it was one of the most beautiful scripts about our humanity,” Domingo shared. “I literally cried because Steven Spielberg believes in the possibility of the human beings we could be.”
Spielberg isn’t tackling this massive project alone. He re-teamed with frequent collaborator David Koepp, the brilliant screenwriter behind Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, to pen the script, which is based on an original story conceived by Spielberg himself.
Disclosure Day hits theaters everywhere on June 12. Check the trailer out below.
