The powerhouse media company MACRO, founded by Charles D. King, is making another major move in Hollywood. The award-winning studio has officially signed a first-look and co-financing agreement with Sony Pictures.
Here is everything you need to know about the new deal and what it means for the future of inclusive storytelling.
MACRO has built a massive reputation as an integrated media company dedicated to creating authentic content that represents Black people and people of color globally. By focusing on premium film, television, and digital content for the “global majority,” MACRO consistently elevates underrepresented artists and perspectives.
This new pact with Sony Pictures builds on a phenomenal track record of both critical and commercial successes. MACRO is the studio behind the Oscar-winning powerhouse Judas and the Black Messiah, a film that cemented the company’s ability to champion culturally profound and historically significant stories.
More recently, MACRO teamed up with Sony Pictures Animation to co-finance the 2026 animated sports hit GOAT (produced alongside Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media).
“Sony has been an outstanding partner, and we’re proud to expand our relationship through a first-look and co-financing agreement,” shared Charles D. King, Founder & CEO of MACRO, with Deadline.
King also highlighted the collaborative effort alongside his team, sharing that the deal will allow them to scale their creative output. “Building on our past work together, James Lopez and I look forward to continuing to bring distinctive stories across genres and formats to audiences worldwide,” King added.
For Sony, locking in a deal with MACRO is a strategic creative win. MACRO has a proven track record of finding and backing incredible projects that resonate deeply with audiences who are often overlooked by traditional Hollywood models.
Sanford Panitch, President of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, praised the studio’s unique vision and sharp execution.
“Macro finds stories where others often aren’t looking,” Panitch shared with Deadline. “Charles and James have an extraordinary history backing their bold instincts and consistently show up being great creative studio partners as well as first-rate producers and co-financiers.”
As an award-winning company, MACRO’s core mission has always been to champion marginalized voices and deliver top-tier storytelling. With Sony’s massive global distribution power and co-financing support backing them, King, Lopez, and the rest of the MACRO team are perfectly positioned to continue shifting the cultural landscape.
