Charles Barkley Gets Real About the “Unfair” Treatment of Immigrants in the U.S.

Charles Barkley has never been one to bite his tongue. Whether he is breaking down a basketball game or weighing in on pop culture, the NBA Hall of Famer is known for his unfiltered opinions. However, during a recent broadcast, Barkley took time to address a topic that is clearly very close to his heart: the current treatment of immigrants in the United States.

The conversation was sparked during the CBS studio show ahead of the Elite Eight matchup between UConn and Duke. The network aired a touching feature segment about UConn Huskies forward Alex Karaban and his family, who are immigrants from the Eastern European country of Belarus.

Moved by the story, Barkley used the moment on national television to reflect on the broader landscape of how immigrants are treated today.

Before diving into his thoughts, the sports analyst acknowledged the heavy nature of the conversation. “I want to be very careful with my words right now. Okay. Because this is a really touchy subject for me,” he began, noting how much he loved the young UConn star and his family whose story had just been shared.

However, Barkley quickly pointed out that this single positive story stands in stark contrast to the harsh realities many others are currently facing.

“The way some of these other immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace,” Barkley stated bluntly.

Barkley went on to emphasize the need for nuance in the national conversation, drawing a line between the negative narratives often amplified in the media and the everyday reality of hardworking families trying to make a living. He shared the clear distinction between “amazing immigrants and criminal immigrants,” expressing his frustration that good people are being unfairly caught in the crossfire.

“What’s going on in our country, what we’re doing to some of these amazing immigrants is really unfortunate and it’s really sad,” he explained. “That’s a great immigrant story. We have a lot of great immigrant stories out there. These stories need to be told.”

For Barkley, the bottom line simply comes down to giving people their rightful due. He wrapped up his candid thoughts with a powerful reminder of the nation’s roots and the people who helped establish it.

“But some of the stuff that’s happening to immigrants in our country right now. It’s really unfortunate and it’s really unfair,” he continued. “Immigrants built this country, and we should admire them and respect them.”
