‘F1’ Sequel Greenlit: Brad Pitt and Damson Idris Expected to Return to the Grid

Hollywood’s high-octane love affair with Formula 1 is officially taking a victory lap. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that a sequel to the blockbuster hit F1 is in the works, following the massive critical and commercial success of the first film.

Bruckheimer broke the news exclusively to the BBC during the Academy Awards luncheon in Los Angeles on Tuesday, putting an end to months of speculation.

“We’re working on a sequel,” Bruckheimer told the BBC, keeping it brief but officially signaling that Apple Original Films is ready to get back on the track.

The announcement comes on the heels of a dominant performance for the original movie. Released in the summer of 2025, F1 raced past expectations, grossing over $630 million globally and becoming Apple’s biggest theatrical hit to date. The film didn’t just win over audiences; it charmed the Academy, securing four Oscar nominations, including a nod for Best Picture.

While Bruckheimer was tight-lipped about specific plot details, the sequel is expected to see Brad Pitt and Damson Idris reprise their roles as the veteran racer Sonny Hayes and his rookie teammate Joshua Pearce.

The chemistry between the two was a driving force behind the first film’s success, telling the story of a fictional team, APXGP, battling for glory against real-life grid titans like Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Speaking of Hamilton, the seven-time world champion’s role as a co-producer was widely credited for the film’s hyper-realistic racing sequences, which were shot during actual Grand Prix weekends.

Bruckheimer noted that he would “of course” be involved in casting decisions for the follow-up, though he stopped short of officially confirming the entire returning roster.

However, given that the first film ended with the APXGP team finding its footing, fans are already theorizing that the sequel could focus on a championship contention run.
