The University of Michigan football program is facing a major shake‑up after head coach Sherrone Moore was fired on Wednesday and later taken into custody as a suspect in an alleged assault, as reported by ESPN.

Moore, 39, was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday night, capping a turbulent day that began with the university announcing his immediate termination.

According to Michigan officials, an internal investigation uncovered “credible evidence” that Moore had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, conduct the school said violated university policy and his contract.

“U‑M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” the university’s statement read.

Just hours later, police activity surrounding the former coach escalated. Saline Police confirmed that officers assisted in locating Moore on Wednesday afternoon before transferring him to Pittsfield Township Police for further investigation into potential charges.

According to Pittsfield Township Police, officers responded around 4:10 p.m. to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road “for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault.” A suspect, later confirmed to be Moore, was taken into custody at the scene.

“This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community,” Pittsfield Police said in a statement. The department added that the case remains active and that no additional details could be released “given the nature of the allegations” and to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

Moore remains lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail while the Washtenaw County Prosecutor reviews the case for possible charges.

The Pittsfield Township Police Department has not announced when additional details or charges may be released.

Story still developing.
