The music world is reeling after the heartbreaking loss of Jubilant Sykes, the Grammy-nominated classical and gospel vocalist whose rich baritone graced concert halls and orchestras across the globe.

Sykes, 71, was fatally stabbed Monday evening inside his Santa Monica home in what authorities allege was an attack by his son.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Delaware Avenue just after 9 p.m. following a 911 report of an assault in progress. When police arrived, they were directed inside the residence, where they found Sykes with severe injuries consistent with stabbing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His son, 31-year-old Micah Sykes, was found inside the home and detained without incident. Authorities recovered a weapon at the scene, and evidence is currently being processed.

Micah is expected to be booked on suspicion of homicide, with the case handed over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Jubilant Sykes wasn’t just a performer; he was a celebrated artist who bridged worlds. His vocal beauty and versatility allowed him to move seamlessly between classical, gospel, jazz, and pop, garnering respect from both critics and peers.

In 2009, his performance as the Celebrant in the recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass earned him a Grammy nomination.

May his legacy live on through every recording, every performance, and every person who felt moved by his voice.
