A staple of American pop culture is making its return. Star Search, the legendary talent competition series that helped launch some of the biggest names in entertainment, is officially coming to Netflix after two decades off the air, and this time, it’s going live.
Netflix has tapped Emmy and Golden Globe–nominated actor and comedian Anthony Anderson to host the reboot, marking a new era for the iconic format that once introduced the world to Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Usher, Dave Chappelle, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and so many others.
Anderson told Netflix’s Tudum that stepping into the hosting role feels both historic and energizing.
“I’m super excited to host this new chapter of Star Search and to introduce such an iconic format to a whole new generation, especially on a global stage like Netflix,” he shared. “The range of talent we’re going to see is going to blow you away… this new era of Star Search will deliver.”
The original Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon from 1983 to 1995 and briefly revived by Arsenio Hall in the early 2000s, was known for spotlighting rising performers across categories like singing, comedy, and dance.
Netflix’s 2026 version expands the competition while maintaining the heart of the show. Categories include music, dance, comedy, variety, magic, and juniors.
Each episode will showcase standout performers going head-to-head in front of millions, but this time, the audience has power like never before.
One of the biggest changes to the format is real-time voting. For the first time, Netflix viewers around the world can vote live to determine which contestants advance.
Anderson calls it a “total game-changer,” saying:
“Knowing that fans from all over the world can cast their votes in real time adds a whole new layer of excitement… It’s like we’re all part of the show and get to be one of the judges.”
Netflix will release a step-by-step guide explaining how voting works across devices.
Star Search returns January 13, 2026, streaming live on Netflix. New episodes air Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
