Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, a rising young talent in his second NFL season and a former standout at Western Michigan, has died at the age of 24. The Cowboys confirmed his passing on Wednesday morning.
Details surrounding his death have not been released. His agent, Jonathan Perzley, shared a brief statement requesting privacy and reflecting on Kneeland’s spirit on and off the field.
“I am shattered to confirm that my client and dearest friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” Perzley said. “Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice and every moment on the field. To lose someone with his talent, spirit and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words.”
The Cowboys organization also expressed its grief, noting Kneeland’s impact in the locker room and on the field.
“Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization,” the team said. “Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
Kneeland’s death comes just days after one of the most memorable moments of his young career. During Monday night’s 27–17 loss to Arizona, he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown.
The NFL released a statement mourning his loss:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland. We have been in contact with the Cowboys and have offered support and counseling resources.”
His passing reverberates far beyond the league, touching family, teammates, and fans who watched his journey from Western Michigan to the NFL.
