In a collaboration with GLAAD, Snoop Dogg has announced that his preschool TV series, Doggyland, will feature same-sex couples.

The refreshing news came on Spirit Day, a celebration of LGBTQ+ youth and a campaign against queerphobic bullying.

Sitting down with The Voice alum Jeremy Beloate, the California rapper discussed their recent song, Love is Love, as well as his growth as it relates to kids seeing healthy images of same-sex couples.

“It’s a beautiful thing that kids can have parents of all walks and be shown love, to be taught what love is because hate is taught and so is love,” he told Beloate. “Being able to have parents from all walks of life, whether it be two fathers, two mothers, whatever it is, love is the key.”

For Snoop, this shift comes as a decisive switch-up from his earlier spurts of queerphobia, specifically regarding children’s programming.

Just last August, on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop expressed discomfort while watching the Disney/Pixar film Lightyear with his grandson, who asked him about same-sex relationships following the film.

The rapper claimed he was “scared to go to the movies now,” saying he didn’t want to be “thrown in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.”

His fairly antiquated ideas go back at least 20 years of maligned statements and lyrics, but hopefully, with the controversy surrounding Lightyear, his own personal growth, collaborating with folks like Beloate, and understanding that queerness is as simple as “love is love,” he turned a new leaf.

At the very least, it makes the 3D-animated kids’ show a starting point for conversations about sexuality for viewers and parents alike.
