Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller Sinners is heading back to theaters this Halloween, and the Oscar conversation around Michael B. Jordan is heating up right alongside it.
The film, which originally premiered earlier this year to critical acclaim, will be re-released in select IMAX theaters from October 30 to November 5. Adding to the Halloween excitement, Sinners-inspired costumes have also hit Spirit Halloween stores.
Coogler, who attended a special Sinners screening at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as part of Cinespia’s outdoor movie series, reflected on the film’s personal significance.
“This is a dream come true,” he told Variety. “This is my favorite event in Los Angeles. I’m from the Bay Area, and L.A. is like our first cousin… But Cinespia is such an L.A.-specific event and so unique. It was always a dream of mine to make a movie that could play here.”
At the center of the horror film conversation is Jordan, Coogler’s longtime collaborator and creative partner, whose haunting dual performance in Sinners has been praised as one of the most technically ambitious and emotionally layered of his career.
Jordan, who has previously earned awards-season attention for Coogler’s Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther, has long been regarded as one of Hollywood’s most consistent leading men.
But Sinners, with its mix of psychological depth, spiritual weight, and Coogler’s signature storytelling, could be the project that finally earns him his first Oscar nomination.
“Mike stepped it up to another level on this,” Coogler said. “We asked him to do this difficult thing technically, playing two different characters, but it also was a performance that we needed to have the backstory that we had before to pull this off. To see him recognized by his peers and other folks in the industry, I know that would mean a lot to him.”
