Former NFL star Doug Martin, known for his stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders, died at age 36 after becoming unresponsive while in the custody of the Oakland Police Department (OPD) on Saturday.
According to OPD and local reports, officers responded around 4:15 a.m. to the 11000 block of Ettrick Street in East Oakland following two separate calls: one for a suspected break-in and another for someone experiencing a medical emergency.
When officers found the individual, later identified as Martin, inside the residence, they say he briefly resisted detention. Paramedics were called after the suspect became unresponsive; Martin was then transported to a hospital where he later died.
The OPD identified him as the suspect but did not clarify the nature of his alleged involvement in the break-in.
The cause of Martin’s death has not been released, and multiple agencies have launched investigations. The officers involved are on paid administrative leave per department policy.
Martin was born in Oakland, California, and raised in Stockton. He played standout college football at Boise State Broncos and was selected 31st overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
