The family of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid is grieving a devastating loss after authorities confirmed his sister, 28-year-old Toraya Reid, was the victim of a homicide on Saturday morning.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, police responded around 11 a.m. to the Paragon Apartment complex in Jackson Township, where they discovered Reid unresponsive near the exit of the building. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities quickly identified Shaquille Green, 29, who was in a dating relationship with Reid, as the suspect. Green was arrested shortly after, spotted running along North New Prospect Road. He has since been charged with murder and multiple weapons offenses.
“A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit identified Green … as the individual responsible for her death,” prosecutors said in a statement.
The tragedy comes just weeks before the Timberwolves open training camp on September 29. Reid, 24, is entering his seventh season in Minnesota, where he has grown from an undrafted free agent in 2019 into one of the team’s most reliable contributors. This summer, he signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension, solidifying his place as one of the league’s top sixth men.
Green remains in custody as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
