The Wayans are back, and the culture is ready.
Comedy and horror have always had an interesting relationship; what makes us scream also makes us laugh when flipped on its head. No franchise has leaned into that duality quite like Scary Movie.
Now, with Scary Movie 6 officially on the way, Marlon Wayans is opening up about which modern classics might get the parody treatment.
In a recent conversation with ComicBook to promote his latest film Him, Wayans couldn’t hide his excitement about diving back into the genre that put the Wayans family’s brand of satire on the map.
“I mean, you know, I’m just a fan of the whole genre, man,” Wayans shared. “I Know What You Did Last Summer may have something in there. I think the Scream franchise is always a great one. I think Heretic was a wonderful film. Longlegs. Get Out. Nope. There are just so many great horror films to pull from that we plan on having a field day. Sinners.”
What makes this tease so exciting is the range. From throwback slashers like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream, to Jordan Peele’s socially charged thrillers Get Out and Nope, Wayans is eyeing material that speaks across generations. Newer titles like Heretic, Longlegs, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners prove that he’s not just looking backward, he’s locked into the horror that’s defining the present moment.
It’s a reminder that the Wayans’ comedic lens isn’t about mocking for the sake of cheap laughs, but about holding a funhouse mirror to the culture. By remixing the films that spark fear, they also tap into the conversations that those stories trigger, whether about race, class, morality, or society’s deepest anxieties.
The original Scary Movie films shaped a generation of comedy fans, mixing slapstick with sharp cultural commentary. But after the Wayans stepped away from the franchise, that magic dimmed. Their return isn’t just nostalgia, it’s an opportunity to reclaim the parody space in a way that feels smart, current, and unapologetically bold.
And with Hollywood leaning heavily on reboots and sequels, Scary Movie 6 could be a refreshing reminder of what satire can do when it’s in the hands of creators who know how to cut through the noise.
