Netflix is turning up the heat on global politics with the return of The Diplomat. The streamer just released a teaser for Season 3, and it looks like the stakes are higher than ever.
Created by Debora Cahn (The West Wing, Homeland), The Diplomat stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, a U.S. diplomat whose ability to juggle policy, power, and personal drama has made her one of Netflix’s most compelling characters. The new season picks up in the aftermath of Season 2’s jaw-dropping finale, which saw the death of President Rayburn and the rise of Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) to the Oval Office.
But with Penn’s sudden ascent to the presidency comes even more uncertainty, especially when Kate suspects Penn of orchestrating a terrorist plot to prevent Scotland’s independence. In a twist that no one saw coming, Kate isn’t just caught between diplomacy and deception; she’s now eyeing the vice presidency, even as her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) pulls strings behind the scenes to make that a reality.
“Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford),” Netflix teases in a preview of the season.
Cahn promises that this season will turn everything on its head. “Season 3 flips the chessboard,” she said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”
Season 3 promises more explosive confrontations, blurred lines between enemies and allies, and a front-row seat to the dark underbelly of diplomacy, where power often comes at the cost of truth.
If Seasons 1 and 2 were any indication, fans should prepare for a smart, addictive ride that blends espionage, international politics, and personal stakes with razor-sharp dialogue.
Season 3 of The Diplomat premieres on October 16 on Netflix.
