Gabe Amo just added another milestone to an already trailblazing legacy.
The U.S. Representative for Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District, and the state’s first-ever Black member of Congress, has officially been initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Amo crossed into Alpha through the Alpha Eta Lambda Chapter in Houston, Texas, on June 1.

Born in Pawtucket to immigrant parents, Amo’s mother from Liberia and his father from Ghana, he was raised in a working-class family that believed deeply in education and community.
Amo’s a Truman Scholar, Marshall Scholar, and an alum of both Wheaton College and the University of Oxford. He also served in senior roles in the Obama and Biden administrations, most recently as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs under President Biden, where he helped state and local leaders access critical federal programs like the American Rescue Plan.

Now, as a freshman Congressman, Amo is focused on tackling big-ticket issues like gun safety, reproductive rights, economic mobility, and climate change, while also working to restore trust in government.
Amo was initiated through the Alpha Eta Lambda Chapter alongside a distinguished group of accomplished men:
- Dr. Marcus Stoddard, a leading cardiologist at the University of Louisville Health
- Dr. Christopher Jones, a physicist and the first Black Democratic nominee for Governor of Arkansas
- James Harris, Senior Director of Diversity and Supplier Diversity at H-E-B
- Judge Joe Stephens, a Harris County judge and former NBA player
The fraternity’s Alpha Eta Lambda Chapter, which spans parts of Texas and falls under the fraternity’s Southwest Region, has been known for initiating high-impact men who are shaping policy, science, education, and the arts.
With the 2026 elections on the horizon and issues like immigration, health care, and gun violence at the forefront, Amo’s commitment to public service, now amplified by the support of a brotherhood that stretches across generations, is a signal that he’s here to lead with both heart and heritage.
