The music world is mourning the loss of Michael Sumler, a beloved member of the legendary funk and R&B group Kool & the Gang, who died in a car crash over the weekend in Cobb County, Georgia, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. He was 71.

Known as “Chicago Mike,” Sumler was behind the wheel late Saturday night when his vehicle collided with another on Veterans Memorial Highway near Buckner Road, just outside Atlanta. According to local authorities, Sumler was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sumler first joined Kool & the Gang in 1985, initially working behind the scenes as a stylist and choreographer before becoming an on-stage presence. Over the years, he became an essential part of the group’s live performances, known for hyping up the crowd, providing backing vocals, and creating a vibrant connection between the band and their audience.

While he may not have been with the original lineup that gave us classics like Celebration, Get Down on It, Jungle Boogie, and Ladies’ Night, Sumler brought fresh energy to the band during its continued touring years and was cherished by fans and bandmates alike.

Beyond the stage, Sumler was committed to giving back. He remained active in the music community, mentoring younger musicians and encouraging creativity in the next generation of performers.

Tributes have poured in following the news of his passing. Fellow funk group ConFunkShun posted on social media: “We had no idea that Sunday night’s ‘Love’s Train’ would be your last. Rest in heavenly peace.”

Kool & the Gang has yet to release an official statement, but fans across the globe have shared heartfelt messages remembering Sumler’s passion, kindness, and the joy he brought to the stage.
