Former Vice President Kamala Harris wasted no time in calling out the Trump administration’s policies in her first major speech since leaving the White House.
Speaking at an event hosted by Emerge America, a political organization that helps train Democratic women to run for office, Harris took some shots at the administration’s handling of the economy, immigration, and overall governance.
In her speech, Harris criticized Trump’s controversial tariff policies, calling them “reckless” and warning that they could push the country into a recession.
“Some people are describing what’s been happening in recent months as absolute chaos. And of course, I understand why,” she said, referring specifically to the tariffs. “Tariffs that— as I predicted—are clearly inviting a recession.”
Harris didn’t hold back, labeling the situation as “the greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history.”
She applauded the Americans who have rallied against these policies, pointing out that the tariffs could increase everyday costs, hurt small businesses, and impact retirement accounts.
Harris also criticized his broader vision for America, which she described as “narrow” and “self-serving.” She accused the president of punishing truth-tellers, favoring loyalists, and exploiting his power for personal gain while leaving everyday Americans to fend for themselves.
During her address, Harris also expressed concern about the state of the American political system, calling attention to the weakening of the system of checks and balances. “What we are experiencing right now is exactly what they envisioned for America,” she said.
“The rules that protect our fundamental rights and freedoms, that ensure each of us has a say about how our government works, will no longer matter,” Harris warned. “And if that happens, the one check, the one balance, the one power that must not fail is the voice of the people.”
Harris’ speech comes just as President Trump marks the 100-day milestone of his second term. Her speech also reflects her ongoing commitment to engaging with the political process and pushing back against the direction she sees the country headed under Trump’s leadership.
