BET is bringing a new workplace comedy to its streaming platform with Varnell Hill, a spinoff of the classic Martin series. Tommy Davidson will reprise his role as Varnell Hill, the guest character that stole the spotlight on the original show.
Set behind the scenes of a late-night talk show, Varnell Hill will follow the chaotic life of a talk show host trying to stay relevant in the fast-changing entertainment world.
Expect plenty of humor, drama, and insider moments as Varnell navigates the corporate side of television—dealing with network executives, business people, and the creative team that makes the show tick. The show promises to deliver laughs with its sharp satire, hilarious cutaways, and a playful fourth-wall-breaking style.
Davidson is excited to be back, saying, “Did you miss me? Well, now you don’t have to! I’m excited and honored to be a part of such a creative project with the brilliant mind of Martin Lawrence, over 30 years in the making. Fans have requested it, and now it’s coming to BET+!”
Martin Lawrence, who co-created Martin, will also serve as an executive producer for the spinoff. Bentley Kyle Evans, another co-creator of Martin, is on board as the showrunner and executive producer. The show will also feature several other executive producers, including Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Andy Horne, Stacy Lyles, Robert Lawrence, and Rae Proctor. Rose Catherine Pinkney and Jason Harvey will also executive produce for BET+.
Production is getting underway soon, and the premiere date will be announced later.
