Legendary filmmaker Spike Lee has officially co-signed Ryan Coogler’s upcoming horror/thriller Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan. The Warner Bros. Pictures film, set to hit theaters on April 18, has already got people talking, but Lee’s enthusiastic endorsement has taken excitement to a new level.
Taking to Instagram, the Oscar-winning director praised the film as a “Black cinematic power” moment, calling it one of the best theatrical experiences he’s had in years.
“I Just Had The Greatest Experience Of Watching A Film In Years,” Lee posted to Instagram. “My Brother RYAN COOGLER Invited Me To Experience His New Film SINNERS (In IMAX). His Magnificent Artistry As A Storyteller Iz On A Annudder’ Level. And Y’know Brother MICHAEL B. JORDAN Did His ‘THANG, THANG.’”
Lee didn’t just stop at praising Coogler’s directing skills and Jordan’s performance—he went on to commend the film’s cinematography, production design, costume design, original score, and visual effects, saying they are all “DOPE.”
He even compared his experience watching Sinners to sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden while his beloved New York Knicks were dominating the Boston Celtics:
“I Was Acting Like I Was Courtside At Da World’s Most Famous Arena—MADISON SQUARE GARDEN—And We’re Kickin’ Da Celtics In Dat Green Ass.”
Lee also shared how deeply Sinners resonates with Black culture and history, stating that Coogler truly “tapped into our ancestors” with this film.
When Spike Lee—one of the most influential voices in Black cinema—gives a movie his stamp of approval, it’s a big deal. His praise for Sinners signals that Coogler and Jordan have created something special and powerful.
