Jonathan Majors, once one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars, has broken his silence for the first time since his domestic violence sentencing, revealing deeply personal traumas that shaped his life.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Majors shared that he was sexually abused as a child—an experience that, he says, contributed to struggles with depression and relationships in adulthood.

The Magazine Dreams actor, who was sentenced in April 2024 following a high-profile trial, has spent the months since in court-mandated domestic violence programs, therapy, and reconnecting with his faith.

Through that process, he says, he was forced to confront unresolved trauma. “I dealt with sexual abuse from both men and women from the time I was 9,” Majors revealed. “From people who are supposed to look after you, in the absence of a father. I was fucked up.”

Majors’ revelation is another example of the often-overlooked reality of sexual abuse among Black men. Conversations about male victims—especially Black men—are rarely given the same space in public discourse. The expectation to embody resilience and toughness often silences these painful experiences.

In recent months, he opened up to his mother about what happened, telling her about the abuse for the first time. “She apologized for not being able to protect me,” he said. “I’m like, ‘It’s not even an issue, mom. I just want you to know. And now we can all get busy and continue to connect and grow and learn from it, because it’s something that was in our family.’”

Majors acknowledged that unpacking his past doesn’t absolve him of his present actions, but it has clarified patterns of behavior. “There are no excuses, but by getting help, you begin to understand things about yourself,” he admitted.

Whether audiences embrace his return remains to be seen. Still, Majors’ willingness to address his past, both publicly and privately, is a step toward the accountability and growth he says he’s seeking.
