President Donald Trump indicated that he is seriously considering ways to serve a third term in office, despite the clear constitutional restrictions set by the 22nd Amendment. During a telephone interview with NBC News from his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump declared, “I’m not joking” when discussing potential methods to extend his presidency beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 following President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four-term presidency, states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
During the interview, Trump hinted at possible ways to circumvent this restriction, telling NBC News anchor Kristen Welker that “there are methods which you could do it.”
When pressed to elaborate, Trump mentioned one idea, speculating about the possibility of Vice President JD Vance running for president, and then “passing the baton” back to Trump. “Well, that’s one,” Trump said, but he was quick to add, “But there are others too. There are others.”
When asked to elaborate on these other methods, Trump declined, saying, “No.”
