New York Mayor Eric Adams Indicted: Here's What We Know
Last night, New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on multiple federal charges including bribery, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations.
The indictment, unsealed on Thursday morning, claims that Adams engaged in illicit activities beginning as early as 2014 when he was Brooklyn Borough President and continuing through his tenure as mayor.
The charges allege that Adams conspired with foreign officials, accepting substantial gifts and bribes in return for favorable treatment. According to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, Adams was “showered” with gifts totaling over $100,000, including luxury travel and accommodations provided by foreign dignitaries and businessmen seeking to gain influence.
The investigation, initiated in 2021, revealed that Adams had pressured New York City Fire Department officials to approve a new Turkish consulate building in Manhattan despite existing safety issues, with threats of job termination for non-compliance. This is part of what prosecutors describe as a "multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise."
Adams responded to the indictment with firm defiance, holding a press conference surrounded by supporters at Gracie Mansion. He stated, "I ask New Yorkers to wait to hear our defense," and affirmed his decision not to resign despite growing calls from political peers and the public.
