Laurence Fishburne Portrays Doc Rivers In New Docudrama About Former, Racist NBA Owner Donald Sterling

One of the biggest scandals in NBA history will drop on Hulu soon.

Clipped - Laurence Fishburne

The official trailer of Clipped, a docudrama, has hit. This movie features actors Laurence Fishburne, Jacki Weaver, Cleopatra Coleman and Ed O’Neil who will be delivering a behind-the-scenes dramatization of one of the more scandalous NBA moments of all time.

The six-part series will drop June 4 on Hulu with back-to-back episodes.

What is this all about? FX’s Clipped follows a notorious basketball team owner, Donald Sterling, and his racist remarks, which were captured on tape and heard around the world. A show based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, the series probes “the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less-functional marriage, and the precipitating tapes’ impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league,” according to Deadline.

Doc Rivers, who Fishburne will play, arrives as coach of the Clippers in 2013. Thanks to a promising roster of grandeur personalities, Rivers has the building blocks to win the organization’s first championship. But the team’s owner, Sterling, played by O’Neill, is a huge problem in the fact that he’s cheap, erratic and is a racist.

But limiting Sterling’s influence to win a title is the goal for Doc. Meanwhile, a courtside power struggle transpires between Sterling’s personal assistant V. Stiviano, played by Coleman, and his wife and business partner of 60 years, Shelly, who is played by Weaver.

Eventually, some racist remarks came out in a video that went viral on social media. And NBA Commissioner Adam Silver ousted Sterling as owner of the LA Clippers, according to Fox LA.

The series also stars Kelly AuCoin as Sterling’s partner, Andy Roeser, Alphonse Nicholson as Chris Paul, Rich Sommers as the Clippers’ PR man, Seth Burton, Corbin Bernsen as Pierce O’Donnell, Clifton Davis as NBA legend Elgin Baylor, and Harriet Sansom Harris as “Justine.”

The executive producers are Gina Welch, serving as creator and showrunner, Emmy-winning producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Zanne Devine, Ramona Shelburne and Kevin Bray, who directed three of the six shows. The series is an FX Production, too.
