Damon Wayans Sr. and Jr. Have a Father-Son Comedy in the Works With CBS
Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. are set to star in a father-son comedy on CBS.
The untitled show, currently in development, is being co-written by Damon Wayans Sr. and former Last Man Standing executive producer Kevin Hench. The two will co-executive produce the sitcom along with Wayans Jr. at CBS Studios, the home of his Two Shakes Entertainment.
According to Deadline, the comedy centers around “Poppa” Wayans Sr., a happily divorced, legendary talk radio host forced to drag his charming, but unmotivated son, approaching his 40s, into overdue adulthood.
The two first appeared on screen together when Wayans Jr., made his TV acting debut with a recurring role on ABC’s My Wife and Kids co-created, executive produced by his father.
The four-time Emmy Award-nominee, Wayans Sr.’s most recent stint on network television was on Fox’s adaptation of the cop film series, Lethal Weapon, where Wayans played the Roger Murtaugh character. This new show is the elder Wayans’ return to a network comedy sitcom since starring in ABC’s My Wife and Kids from 2001 to 2005.
Wayans Jr., 39, has worked extensively on big and small screens for years. Starring in television comedies like New Girl and Happy Endings. He has also appeared in films such as Supercool, Cherry, and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.
Both stars are working on projects for streaming services. The elder Wayans, 62, will be starring in the upcoming Tubi thriller, Cinnamon, with Pam Grier. Wayans Jr. has two projects in the works for Netflix, recently wrapping Players, and serving as executive producer of the upcoming drama series, Glamorous.
Wayans Sr. is best known for his creative and hilarious stint on the 1990s sketch comedy series, In Living Color, on Fox, alongside brothers Keenen, Shawn and Marlon, and sister, Kim. The Wayans have kept fans laughing for decades, with My Wife and Kids currently finding a new audience in syndication. Damon Wayans Sr. and his son are revisiting a formula that works for the Wayans, acting with family. His return to the small screen, with son in tow, is sure to bring the laughs as only they can.
