Leonard Robinson Talks the Final Season of Insecure, Divine Nine Controversy and More

Updated: Nov 3, 2021

Insecure is back! The hit HBO series premiered its fifth and final season on October 24.

Kicking off at the homecoming at their alma mater, Stanford University, Issa, Molly, Tiffany and Kelli were all back together living their lives. With so much to unpack after the episode, we solicited some help from one of the actors of the hit show.

Leonard Robinson plays Taurean Jackson, Molly’s eager coworker who she began working with in season 3 when she went to the “Black” law firm. We’ve seen him throughout the series and are expected to see him during the final season. We spoke with him as we recapped the first episode, where he shares insight on Molly and Taurean’s relationship, the controversy of Tiffany wearing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated paraphernalia and more.

On the potential for Taurean and Molly to have more than a working relationship, Leonard says we will have to wait and see.

It's so funny that there's a lot of theories on that. And I don't know where they get that from because I have a different experience with the show. I'm a big antagonist in season three that forces her to go on a path and a lot of growth and change. So that doesn't necessarily mean a romantic relationship comes out of that. You can just have a professional relationship out of that. An improved professional relationship… other than that you just got to watch the show.

Leonard is a Lifetime Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated and had this to say about the recent controversy surrounding the show’s character wearing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated paraphernalia.

First of all, leave my best friend alone. Amanda is a wonderful person and comedian. I just got off the phone with her right before I got on this. And to put it in her words, she's an employee. When you show up on set there's a costumer and a designer who decide what you're going to wear. And outside of it not fitting correctly, we don't have a say. That outfit had been approved, a matter of fact, it was probably approved by the AKA headquarters. They probably actually got the approval.

On Issa ending things with Lawrence, Leonard said, “It was such a brilliantly written moment.”

What a powerful moment in that. You have to rewind back even to the car ride where Lawrence is asking about "what should we eat, what are we going to do?" You know, he's moving on. And I think we've all been in those situations in relationships where you're faking it, you're faking the funk a little bit, you know something's not right. But because you don't want to have that real conversation you're just going to press on like nothing's wrong. But I just thought that was such a brilliantly written moment, and wonderfully acted moment from both Jay and Issa.
