Danny Glover has spent nearly four decades giving audiences some of the most memorable performances in Hollywood history. Now, at 79, the Lethal Weapon and The Color Purple star is sharing one of his most personal stories yet.

In an exclusive interview on the Today show, Glover revealed that he has been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years. The conversation, conducted by former NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt, was taped at Glover’s home and included several of his family members.

Glover said he was diagnosed with the progressive neurodegenerative condition just before he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the January 2022 Governors Awards, meaning when he stood on that stage to accept the honor, the audience had no idea what he was already facing.

Despite the weight of the diagnosis, Glover’s perspective in the interview was grounded. “I can live with it, in a sense,” he said. “I’m sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing.” The disease has slowed his movement and affected his speech, but Glover told Holt that his family has his back.

Since being diagnosed, Glover has remained active, attending events in his San Francisco community. The Alzheimer’s Association has provided him guidance on staying physically active, managing blood pressure and diabetes, getting quality sleep, and staying socially engaged.

His family members, who joined him for the interview, expressed hope that Glover sharing his story publicly will help challenge some of the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease.
