Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke passed away on Monday, May 11, at the age of 29. The news was confirmed on Tuesday by the team, the league, and his agency, Priority Sports.

The Grizzlies released a statement describing Clarke as an “outstanding teammate and an even better person.” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also expressed his condolences, praising Clarke as a “beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit.”

His agency, Priority Sports, remembered him as the “gentlest soul” who was always there for his friends and family.

According to reports, emergency responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department were called to a home in the San Fernando Valley around 5 p.m. local time on Monday, where Clarke was pronounced dead at the scene. While an official cause of death has not been released pending an autopsy, authorities are reportedly investigating a possible overdose after finding drug paraphernalia at the scene; however, no foul play is suspected.

A native of Vancouver, Clarke was a standout at San Jose State and Gonzaga before being drafted 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. He made an immediate impact, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020 alongside teammate Ja Morant.

Over his seven seasons in Memphis, Clarke became a fan favorite known for his elite athleticism and efficient scoring. However, his recent years were plagued by significant injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon in 2023 and various knee and calf issues that limited him to just two games this past season.

Beyond the court, Clarke was involved in the Memphis community, recently celebrating his 29th birthday by donating books and resources to a local elementary school to emphasize the importance of education.

Clarke’s death comes just weeks after an April 2026 arrest in Arkansas involving charges of possession of a controlled substance (kratom) and fleeing from police during a high-speed chase. At the time of his passing, he was out on bond while the case remained open.
