The highly anticipated Obama Presidential Center, often lovingly referred to by locals and supporters as “Obama City” due to its massive scale and cultural footprint, is finally getting ready to open its doors on the South Side of Chicago.
The sprawling campus promises to be a monumental celebration of the 44th president’s legacy, as well as a bustling community hub for the neighborhood where his political journey began. However, as the exclusive guest list for the grand opening comes together, one notable political figure has been intentionally left off the roster.
According to a recent report from People, President Donald Trump has not been invited to the upcoming festivities. While the gathering of living presidents is somewhat of a standard tradition for major historical dedications and library openings, the Obama Foundation is reportedly opting out of extending an invitation to Trump.
Given the long history of political and personal tension between Barack Obama and Donald Trump, the decision to exclude him from this milestone likely does not come as a huge surprise to the public.
Interestingly, the exclusion is not a blanket ban on former Republican commanders-in-chief. People noted that former President George W. Bush did indeed receive an invitation to the grand opening.
Over the years, the Obamas and the Bushes have developed a well-documented, surprisingly warm friendship, characterized by mutual respect and lighthearted moments shared at various state functions. This genuine camaraderie clearly earned Bush a coveted spot at the celebration.
Beyond the inevitable political chatter surrounding the guest list, the opening of the center is a massive moment for the city of Chicago. Situated in historic Jackson Park, the campus is designed to be much more than a traditional presidential library.
The grounds will feature a world-class museum, a public library branch, lush green spaces, a recording studio, and a towering structure dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation of civic leaders.
