British boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria on Monday, December 29, that resulted in the deaths of two people and left the former heavyweight champion with minor injuries. The crash occurred on the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, local authorities confirmed.
According to police and Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and four other men collided with a stationary truck during what preliminary reports describe as an unsafe overtaking maneuver at high speed.
Two of Joshua’s fellow passengers, both British nationals, were killed instantly at the scene, while another survived with injuries. Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Just look at the terrible state of Nigeria.

After a major accident reportedly involving Anthony Joshua, where two lives were lost, there was no visible emergency response; no ambulance, no proper medical care. Instead, he was made to sit upright in the front of a police van… pic.twitter.com/xZ5IEP9hF6
Footage circulating from the crash site shows Joshua conscious and being helped from the wreckage by onlookers. Despite his visible discomfort, the injuries he suffered are not believed to be life-threatening.
Local police have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision, with the FRSC citing “excessive speed” and “wrongful overtaking” as key contributing factors in the accident.
The tragic incident occurred just days after Joshua’s high-profile knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, a fight that was broadcast globally on Netflix.
Joshua, 36, has close personal ties to Nigeria through his heritage and was visiting the country at the time of the crash. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, said early indications suggest Joshua is “okay,” but further updates are expected as investigations continue.
