London’s most relentless detective is back on the case. Idris Elba is set to reprise his role as the brooding, brilliant, and unpredictable Detective Chief Inspector John Luther in a new feature film, the highly anticipated follow-up to Luther: The Fallen Sun.
The next chapter in the Luther saga reunites Elba with familiar faces, including Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk and Ruth Wilson as the enigmatic Alice Morgan.
Director Jamie Payne and series creator Neil Cross will also return, keeping the essence of the original BBC crime thriller intact while raising the stakes even higher.
“Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family,” says Cross. “I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
The film picks up with a new wave of brutal and seemingly random murders that terrorize London.
Luther, no longer in uniform and still haunted by the ghosts of his past, is secretly called back into action. But this time, he’s up against enemies on all sides, and it’s not clear who he can trust.
Director Payne promises a deeper dive into Luther’s complex world.
“Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together,” he says. “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!”
The original Luther series, which ran from 2010 to 2019, earned critical acclaim for its gritty storytelling, psychological intensity, and Elba’s magnetic performance, a role that earned him multiple awards and cemented his reputation as one of television’s most compelling antiheroes.
After the success of Luther: The Fallen Sun on Netflix, which expanded the series into a cinematic universe, this next installment looks to mix the psychological tension of the show with the grand scale of a feature film.
No release date has been announced yet, but one thing’s for sure: when the darkness rises again, only Luther can face it head-on.
