The success of the Spider-Man franchise and the offshoots of the IP have birthed another addition to the Spider-verse. Following widespread attention and appreciation for the characterization in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the fan-favorite Spider-Punk character is getting his own animated film, co-written by the voice actor of the character, Daniel Kaluuya.
Spider-Punk’s anarchist and rebellious energy drew a lot of attention and became an instant icon. While some might find the character’s values problematic in a moral sense, the character resonated with the target audience, standing for values, being entertaining, and unapologetic fun.
So how did Kaluuya land the role? Known for his performances in Black Panther, Judas and the Black Messiah and Get Out, Kaluuya has proven his presence and versatility, staking his claim to be the sole British Spider-Man in the film.
In an interview with Capital XTRA two years ago, Kaluuya summed up his take on the character:
“What is Punk? It’s basically someone that’s resistant, doesn’t their way, anti-establishment. Something that goes from feeling. That’s how I saw Spider-Punk.”
Given the strong reception to his performance and his clear grasp of the character’s core, it’s no surprise Kaluuya is now helping to shape Spider-Punk’s solo story alongside co-writer Ajon Singh.
While it’s unclear how much writing experience they have, Kaluuya has a few projects under his belt, and Singh has a film currently in post-production with A24 producing.
However, if Kaluuya’s voice work was any indication, fans have plenty to look forward to.
