R&B star Durrell “Tank” Babbs Sr. is officially heading to Broadway, making his stage debut in Alicia Keys’ critically acclaimed musical, Hell’s Kitchen. The nine-time Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and actor will take on the role of Davis, a musician and estranged father, in the production inspired by Keys’ own life story.
Tank steps into the role for a 13-week limited engagement beginning March 11, taking over for Brandon Victor Dixon, whose final performance will be on March 9.
“Stepping onto the Broadway stage is a dream come true,” Tank said in a statement. “Music and acting have always been a part of my journey, and now, I get to bring them together in a whole new way. The energy of live theatre is unmatched, and I’m honored to join this incredible cast and be part of telling this powerful story through Alicia Keys’ music. This transition is both thrilling and humbling, and I can’t wait to give audiences everything I’ve got!”
Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen tells the coming-of-age story of 17-year-old Ali, a young girl growing up in a cramped apartment near Times Square with her mother. As she dreams of making it big in New York City, Ali is confronted with her mother’s fears, her own ambitions, and the sudden reappearance of her estranged father (Tank).
The show features music and lyrics by Keys and a book by Kristoffer Diaz. It first opened on Broadway on April 20 after beginning previews on March 28 at the Shubert Theatre.
Tank’s 25-year career in music has solidified him as an R&B icon. With eight No. 1 singles, including hits like “When We,” “I Deserve,” and “Can’t Let It Show,” he has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, from Beyoncé and Aaliyah to Fantasia and Jamie Foxx.
Now, he’s bringing his vocal and acting talents to Broadway.
