Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) has introduced a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution allowing President Donald Trump to serve a third term as president.
Ogles argues that Trump’s leadership is essential for the nation to address ongoing challenges and reclaim its former strength.
The proposed amendment states:
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
Could this mean a third term for Barack Obama? The proposed amendment’s language specifically disqualifies former presidents who have already served two consecutive terms, such as Obama. This provision ensures that Obama, Bill Clinton, and George Bush cannot run again, while Trump and Biden remain eligible.
“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles said. “He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”
“I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something. Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out,’” Trump hinted at the idea of a third term to House Republicans in Washington after his 2024 election win.
For Ogle’s proposed amendment to pass, it would require a two-thirds majority vote in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, followed by ratification from 38 state legislatures.
Given the partisan divide in Congress and across the country, achieving these thresholds is highly unlikely without significant bipartisan support. Democrats, who largely oppose Trump’s presidency, are unlikely to back an amendment that could extend his time in office.
