The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers are suiting up once again, and this time they’re headed to Disney+. After several failed attempts to successfully reboot the iconic franchise, Disney+ is taking another shot at bringing the classic series to life.

Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are set to write, produce, and serve as showrunners for the upcoming villain fighting series.

According to The Wrap, Hasbro has struck a new deal with Disney+ to reimagine Power Rangers for a new generation. This development comes nearly a year after a similar attempt to revive the franchise at Netflix failed. Before that, Lionsgate had tried its hand at a big-screen reboot with the 2017 movie Power Rangers, but the project ultimately fizzled despite positive reactions from a loyal fanbase.

This time around, Disney+ seems intent on doing things differently. The official word is that the new series “will reinvent the franchise for a whole new generation of fans while delighting those who already know and love the world of Power Rangers.”

What this reimagining will look like is still under wraps, but with Steinberg and Shotz, who have proven themselves with other high-profile fantasy-action projects, it’s clear Disney+ has faith in the creative direction.

The Power Rangers franchise has been a pop culture phenomenon since it first debuted in 1993 with Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. The combination of martial arts, spandex-clad heroes, and giant robots fighting monstrous creatures was an instant hit, leading to countless iterations, movies, and spinoffs. However, despite its staying power, live-action reboots have struggled to capture the same magic as the original series.

Since Hasbro acquired the franchise in 2018, there have been several attempts to reboot the property across various platforms. However, none have truly taken off. Still, the continued efforts to revive the brand prove that the Power Rangers universe remains a goldmine of storytelling potential.

Can Power Rangers finally get the high-quality, live-action reboot fans have been clamoring for? Only time will tell, but Disney+ has shown it is willing to invest in the right talent to make it happen.
