The Philadelphia Eagles are making sure Saquon Barkley remains a key part of their team for years to come, rewarding him with a record-breaking contract extension after a historic season that helped lead the team to a Super Bowl victory.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles and Barkley have agreed to a two-year, $41.2 million extension, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. The deal guarantees $36 million at signing, with the opportunity to earn an additional $15 million in incentives and escalators.
Barkley’s first year in Philadelphia couldn’t have been more successful. After signing a three-year, $37.75 million contract in March 2024, he delivered a monster season, rushing for 2,005 yards in the regular season—becoming just the ninth player in NFL history to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark.
Barkley added 499 rushing yards in the postseason, setting the NFL record for most combined rushing yards in a single season (regular season + playoffs). His 2,504 total rushing yards cemented his MVP-caliber performance and played a major role in securing the Eagles’ second Super Bowl title in franchise history.

“Saquon just had the best season any skill position player has had in NFL history,” Howie Roseman, General Manager of the Eagles said. “You can debate it, but the numbers don’t lie. He was our workhorse, our leader, and a driving force behind our success.”
The new extension runs through the 2028 season, when Barkley will be 31 years old. With an average annual value of over $20 million per season, Barkley is now the highest-paid running back in league history—a rarity in an era where the value of running backs has often been debated.
