Baton Rouge authorities have taken one suspect into custody in connection with the tragic death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson, which is now being investigated as a fraternity hazing incident. According to law enforcement sources, 23-year-old Caleb McCray, a graduate of Southern University and a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, has been arrested and charged with criminal hazing and manslaughter.

Officials confirmed that Wilson, a junior at Southern University, was participating in an off-campus, unsanctioned fraternity ritual on the night of February 27. The ritual, reportedly involving Omega Psi Phi fraternity members and pledges, was being conducted inside a warehouse off Greenwell Springs Road.

According to initial reports, Wilson was punched in the chest as part of the hazing ritual and collapsed shortly afterward. He was rushed to a local hospital around 3 a.m. but was later pronounced dead.

On Friday morning, the Baton Rouge Police Department held a press conference to address the case, confirming McCray’s arrest and shedding light on the ongoing investigation.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore stated that 15 to 20 individuals were present at the warehouse at the time of Wilson’s collapse, including both fraternity members and pledges. Investigators are currently working to identify all individuals involved.

The national headquarters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. released a statement, saying that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement and will take necessary actions based on the investigation’s outcome.

Following Wilson’s death, Southern University has suspended all fraternity, sorority, and student organization intake processes. The university has also launched its own hazing investigation and student judiciary process to assess whether campus policies were violated.

McCray’s legal team has since responded to the charges, emphasizing that their client maintains his innocence.

McCray’s attorney issued the following statement:

“First and foremost, we extend our deepest condolences to the Wilson family. The loss of such a bright light is an immeasurable tragedy, and our hearts go out to all who knew and loved Caleb Wilson. The charges brought against Mr. Caleb McCray are serious, and we acknowledge the gravity of this matter. However, it is essential to remember that an accusation is not proof of guilt. At this time, I have not been presented with any evidence to support such serious accusations. I maintain my client’s innocence and urge the public to withhold rushing to judgment until all the evidence is heard.”

As the investigation continues, authorities have not ruled out additional arrests. The manslaughter charge against McCray carries a potential sentence of up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
