Meet the Power Players of Netflix’s ‘Running Point’

Netflix has released its new comedy series Running Point and it’s definitely a show to add to your list.

The 10-episode series created by Mindy Kaling follows Isla Gordon, played by Kate Hudson, who unexpectedly becomes the president of one of the most storied franchises in professional basketball after a scandal forces her brother to step down. With a skeptical board, a league dominated by men, and a team in need of a leader, Isla has to prove she belongs at the helm of the family business.

The Los Angeles Waves franchise is run by Isla and her brothers—eldest Cam Gordon (Justin Theroux), the “youngest” Sandy Gordon (Drew Tarver) and Ness (Scott MacArthur)—each dealing with their own issues outside of the organization.

The team’s chief of staff Ali (Brenda Song), also Isla’s best friend, is also there to make sure everything is in order in the most direct way possible. In addition, she has taken on the role as mentor to Jackie Moreno, played by Fabrizio Guido, who is in search of family in the midst of being thrown into an executive assistant position.

Jay Ellis plays Jay Brown, the head coach, who is a great coach with his zen-like coaching philosophy. But when personal issues get involved, his leadership is tested.

No team is not without its standouts and the Waves have their share. Toby Sanderman plays Marcus Winfield, who is an aging superstar. With two championship rings, two Olympic gold medals, and 12 All-Star appearances, Marcus is a legend in the league, but his motivation is slipping.

Travis Bugg, played by Chet Hanks, is definitely the rebel of the team who is talented but troublesome. On the court, Travis is a playmaker with raw talent, but off the court, he’s a constant headache for management.

Then you have the rookie. Uche Agada plays Dyson Gibbs, the newest member of the team, who is not only trying to become a better player but also figuring out his new role as a professional baller.

Roberto Sanchez plays Stephen Ramirez, the intimidating chairman of the Waves’ board. Ramirez is all business, no nonsense.

And you can’t have a sports comedy without a sportscaster. Jalen Rose steps in as himself, serving as an NBA analyst who isn’t afraid to call out the team’s struggles while echoing what fans are thinking.

Running Point is not just another sports comedy—it offers a hilarious look inside a sports team’s back office, providing a story about the dynamic men and women who work there.
