Apple TV+ is set to debut a two-part documentary film event, Number One on the Call Sheet, celebrating the Black leading men and women who have shaped Hollywood. Premiering globally on March 28, the series will explore the journeys, challenges, and triumphs of Black actors who have paved the way and continue redefining what it means to be a leading star in the entertainment industry.
With exclusive, behind-the-scenes insights from some of Hollywood’s biggest icons, Number One on the Call Sheet offers a deeply personal and candid look into what it means to be a Black leading actor or actress in an industry that has long been fraught with racial barriers.
Part one, Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood, spotlights the resilience and talent of Black male actors, detailing their rise to leading man status. Directed by Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang, The Black Godfather), this segment explores the paths of Black male actors who have reached Hollywood’s highest ranks.
Featuring interviews with Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Don Cheadle, Idris Elba, Morgan Freeman, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, among others, the film provides a rare glimpse into their struggles and triumphs.
Executive produced by Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart, the film sheds light on how these actors navigated systemic challenges, shattered stereotypes, and built careers that have influenced generations.
Part two, Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Women in Hollywood, examines the unique struggles and successes of Black women in the industry, highlighting the challenges they have overcome in their careers.
Directed by Shola Lynch (Chisholm ’72: Unbought & Unbossed, Free Angela and All Political Prisoners), this installment highlights the experiences of Black women who have made their mark in the entertainment industry.
Featuring powerhouse talent from Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Halle Berry, Whoopi Goldberg, Octavia Spencer, Cynthia Erivo, Gabrielle Union, Tiffany Haddish, Taraji P. Henson, and Ruth Negga, this documentary shines a light on the challenges Black actresses have faced in securing lead roles and crafting long-lasting careers.

Number One on the Call Sheet isn’t just about celebrating the success of Black actors—it’s about acknowledging the barriers they’ve had to break through. For decades, Black artists have fought for visibility and meaningful roles in an industry that has historically typecast, overlooked, or underpaid them.
