Jay-Z has spoken out following the dismissal of a lawsuit that accused him and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual assault, calling the allegations “frivolous, fictitious, and appalling.”
The lawsuit, filed anonymously by Jane Doe, alleged that the two music moguls had raped a 13-year-old girl in 2000. However, on Friday, the plaintiff voluntarily withdrew the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled in its current form.
The case was one of several sexual misconduct lawsuits filed against Combs, but this was the first and only case linking Jay-Z to such allegations. Jay-Z’s legal team consistently denied the claims, and following the withdrawal, he issued a strongly worded statement about the case’s dismissal and the toll it had taken on him and his family.
Calling the dismissal a “victory,” Jay-Z—real name Shawn Carter—expressed his relief but also frustration over what he sees as a failure of the legal system in allowing baseless allegations to be made without consequences.
“The frivolous, fictitious, and appalling allegations have been dismissed. This civil suit was without merit and never going anywhere. The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims,” Carter wrote in a note posted on Roc Nation’s X account.
“The trauma that my wife, my children, loved ones, and I have endured can never be dismissed. This 1-800 lawyer gets to file a suit hiding behind Jane Doe, and when they quickly realize that the money grab is going to fail, they get to walk away with no repercussions. The system has failed,” Carter continued.
“The courts must protect victims, OF COURSE, while with the same ethical responsibility, the courts must protect the innocent from being accused without a shred of evidence. May the truth prevail for all victims and those falsely accused equally,” Jay-Z added calling for great protection for both real victims and those falsely accused.
Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, also weighed in, criticizing what he called a meritless case that should have never been brought in the first place.
“By standing up in the face of heinous and false allegations, Jay has done what few can – he pushed back, he never settled, he never paid one red penny, he triumphed and cleared his name.”
Spiro emphasized that the accusations lacked credibility from the start, reinforcing Jay-Z’s assertion that he was unfairly targeted.
