The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend was a celebration of Black art at the box office as Lawrence Lamont‘s One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, made an impressive debut.

The comedy opened as the number-one film in North America, giving Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King stiff competition.

One of Them Days is the first Black female-led comedy to hit theaters since Girls Trip in 2017. Produced by Issa Rae and directed by Lamont, the film stars Palmer and SZA as Dreux and Alyssa, two roommates navigating a series of comedic misadventures as they race to pay their overdue rent.

The film opened to $14.2 million, with a reported budget of $14.5 million. One of Them Days is one of the highest-rated comedies, with a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Mufasa: The Lion King reclaimed the top spot domestically over the four-day MLK weekend, One of Them Days still made waves. It outperformed Blumhouse’s Wolf Man, which earned $12 million.
