In the aftermath of the Southern California fires, the community is stepping up in significant ways, doing all they can to provide support.

Walt Butler, an 83-year-old pillar of the Altadena community, has tragically lost his home of over 60 years in the devastating Eaton Fire.

Known for his lifelong dedication to helping others, Butler is now relying on the kindness of the very community he has supported for decades to rebuild his life.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to support Butler, specifying that the funds will be used to secure temporary housing, replace essential belongings, and assist in rebuilding his home and vehicles.

The campaign has already drawn significant attention, thanks to the outpouring of love and gratitude from those who have been touched by Butler’s generosity over the years. At the time of this article, it has raised $745,837, significantly surpassing the initial goal of $250,000.

For decades, Butler operated a beloved shoe store in the area, where he not only sold shoes but gave them away to children in need. Beyond his business, Butler mentored local youth, sponsored sports teams, and provided aid to seniors and those experiencing homelessness.

In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram by @MakeBigTalk, Butler reflected on his loss and unwavering hope:

“I lost everything. From a guy with everything to nothing. I spent my whole life helping people. I didn’t think it would happen to me, but it did. But I have my health and my life.”

The community’s response has been swift and heartfelt. Messages of gratitude and support for Butler flood social media, with many sharing stories of his kindness. One former mentee described how Butler’s generosity inspired them to help others, saying, “Walt gave me shoes when I didn’t have them. Now it’s my turn to give back to him.”

Butler’s children—Tasia Lynne, TreyJohn, Michelle, and Nicole—are spearheading the fundraising efforts. “Our father, Walt Butler, has been the heart and soul of Altadena and Pasadena for decades,” they wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Walt has always been the first to lend a helping hand, and we hope to rally the same love and support he’s shared with so many.”
