Travis Hunter Jr. Wins 2024 Heisman Trophy, Honors Father in Emotional Speech

Travis Hunter

Travis Hunter Jr., the two-way star for the Colorado Buffaloes, made history on Saturday night as he was awarded the 2024 Heisman Trophy in New York City.

The Palm Beach County native delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech, dedicating the honor to his father, Travis Hunter Sr., and expressing gratitude to his family, teammates, and coaches, including Deion Sanders, who played a pivotal role in his journey.

Hunter’s tribute to his father was emotional. Fighting back tears, he acknowledged his dad’s sacrifices and unwavering support, saying, “I want to say something to my father. He’s not here and wasn’t able to make it but I know you’re watching on TV,” Hunter said. “Dad, I love you. For all the stuff you went through man… Now look at your oldest son. I did it for you, man.”

Although Hunter Sr. could not attend the ceremony, he chose to watch from their Boynton Beach home.

Hunter also credited Coach Deion Sanders, who mentored him since his days as the nation’s top recruit in 2022. Breaking the norm, Hunter chose to play for Sanders at Jackson State, an HBCU in the FCS, playing both offense and defense.

Following Sanders to Colorado in 2023, Hunter thrived, overcoming injuries and showing his versatility as a wide receiver and lockdown cornerback. This season, he delivered extraordinary performances on both sides of the ball, earning him Colorado’s first Heisman Trophy in 30 years.

As Hunter hoisted the trophy, it was clear that his journey—from a trailblazing commitment to Sanders’ leadership to his heartfelt dedication to family—had come full circle.
