It’s about that time of year when the federal government is on the verge of being shutdown.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has spoken out about the looming government chaos, urging Republicans to uphold a bipartisan agreement to fund the government.
In a press conference, Jeffries criticized House Republicans for what he described as a “reckless” approach that could harm millions of Americans.
The federal government is on the brink of a shutdown due to a failure to pass appropriations bills necessary to fund operations. While Democrats and Senate Republicans had previously reached a bipartisan agreement, some House Republicans have opposed the deal, pushing for deeper spending cuts and controversial policy demands.
If the shutdown happens, services would be disrupted, federal employees and military members would go unpaid, and economic consequences could hit the country. Essential workers, including TSA agents and border patrol officers, would be required to work without pay, and holiday travel would be a nightmare.
Jeffries says the initial funding agreement was designed to address the needs of working-class Americans, farmers, veterans, and those recovering from natural disasters. He accused House Republicans of prioritizing partisan interests over the well-being of the country.
“This is a moment that’s not about millionaires and billionaires. It’s about the harm that House Republicans will do to the American people if the government shuts down,” Jeffries said.
