Disney’s latest addition to The Lion King franchise, Mufasa: The Lion King, roared to victory at the Christmas box office, earning $14.7 million.
Robert Eggers‘ Nosferatu, starring Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe, secured second place with $11.5 million, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continued its solid run with $10.3 million, pushing its domestic total to $88 million.
The prequel, which opened on December 20th, has had a high climb to the top of the mountain, receiving a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes. On opening day, Mufasa: The Lion King brought in $13.3 million with an estimated budget of $200 million. But it’s possible that word of mouth and fans wanting to make the movie a family event contributed to increased viewership closer to the actual Christmas holiday.
Also on Christmas, The Fire Inside hit theaters with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film showcases the awe-inspiring journey of Shields, a high school junior from Flint, Michigan, who defied immense odds to rewrite the history of boxing. Shields became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport, not once but twice, triumphing at the 2012 and 2016 Games.
