Yesterday, Denzel Washington took the next step in his spiritual journey, being baptized at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ (COGIC).

The ceremony marked his formal commitment to ministry, as he also received his ministry license, beginning his journey as a minister-in-training.

Washington’s father was a Pentecostal minister, instilling a foundation of faith that has guided him throughout his life. While this upbringing shaped his early years, Washington has often spoken about his faith’s evolution as he matured. He is currently a member of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles, but his baptism at Kelly Temple COGIC is a personal milestone calling it his “greatest accomplishment.”

“It took a while, but I’m finally here. If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit,” Washington declared during the emotional ceremony.

In his testimony, Washington reflected on a prophecy given to him 50 years ago by Miss Ruth Green, a woman in his mother’s beauty parlor.

“She said, ‘You are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people,’” Washington shared. “She didn’t say You’re going to get an Academy Award. She didn’t say any of those things…And 50 years later, look at, look at God.”

Denzel’s wife of 40 years, Paula Washington, was by his side and also spoke during the ceremony.

“I’m very proud of you,” Paula said. “You are the head of our house. You set a great example for our children who are now adult children and who know the difference because we have shown them the difference.”
