Valentine’s Day is here and it’s the perfect time to look at films that explore Black love. Here are some of our favorite films you can watch while cozying up with your Valentine.
Guava Island
Donald Glover may currently be “Mr. Smith,” but he was one time Rihanna‘s leading man in the Amazon Prime musical film Guava Island. Donald and Rihanna played a couple on the fictional Guava Island, with Glover’s character expressing his love through music.
Southside With You
The origins of the true life love story of Barack and Michelle Obama are portrayed in Southside With You. Parker Sawyer portrays future President Barack Obama and Tika Sumpter portrays former First Lady Michelle.
The Seat Filler
Dwayne Martin played a seat filler who steals the heart of an R&B star played by Kelly Rowland in The Seat Filler.
B-Boy Blues
James Earl Hardy‘s novel B-Boy Blues comes to life in the 2021 film adaptation starring Timothy Richardson and Thomas Mackie. The film follows the burgeoning complicated relationship between a Harlem journalist and a bike messenger.
Boomerang
The classic Eddie Murphy film Boomerang features Murphy playing the character Marcus who finds it difficult to be committed to one woman. The classic film pairs Murphy with both Halle Berry and Robin Givens two of the biggest Black actresses of the nineties.
Poetic Justice
Another classic that paired two legends Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur as a couple. The film has inspired many real-life couples to recreate Justice and Lucky’s embraces such as Halle Bailey and DDG, thirty years after the film’s release.
